FREDERIKA LITTLE
Nord: Archaeology of a Scandinavian Landscape
Inspiration for this collection has been drawn from my Danish heritage, the word ‘Nord’ meaning North in Danish. The combined themes of Scandinavian scenery, history and mythology have been explored to create a range of samples for womenswear. Ancient artefacts that have been dug up from beneath layers of earth and ice tell a story about the ancient culture of the land. The patterns and textures on these artefacts, particularly carvings into wood, rock and bone, have inspired the style of mark-making and drawing. Designs feature a modern interpretation of these patterns by using my own photography of the stormy northern sea, frozen lakes and misty forests of Denmark. An element of simplicity and subtlety is sustained throughout the collection, in order to maintain a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic. The clean and wintery colour palette is derived from the soft pastels, dark blues and shades of grey found within the natural scenery, with a few surprising pops of bright colour.
