Exploration of the Loom : From Primitive to Present
Inspired by learning traditional weaving in Ghana, West Africa, this investigation was to look at how looms can influence the cloth being woven, and the comparison and relationship between looms and hand weaving techniques.
Once understanding the influence that various looms have over the cloth, I then took to using the capabilities of 16-24 shaft looms and transferring traditional techniques onto them, resulting in a context of ideas within woven pieces. Cloth produced is the outcome of combining traditional and contemporary weaving methods - utilising bright colours and geometric shapes with the use of bright cottons and naturally dyed wools – all skilfully inspired by traditional weaving cultures.
